ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: A questionnaire was administered to 936 college students to investigate the mediating effect of psychological resilience in the association between mindfulness and college student depression, as well as the moderating role of gender. METHODS: For this study, data was collected between 20 April and 1 May 2023 at three universities in Jiangxi Province using a random sampling method. 963 Chinese university students were surveyed using the Adolescent Mindfulness Scale, the Psychological Resilience Scale, and the Depression Self-Rating Scale.SPSS24.0 software was used for correlation analysis and linear regression analysis, and PROCESS v3.4 model 7 was used to analyze this mediated model with moderating effects. RESULTS: In the mediated effects model, the direct effect of mindfulness on college depression levels was significant (95% CI -0.43, -0.31); the indirect effect of mindfulness on college depression through psychological resilience was also significant (95% CI -0.34, -0.23); the interaction effect of mindfulness and gender was also found to be significant (95% CI 0.03, 0.16) in the mediated model with moderation. CONCLUSION: Mindfulness not only affect depression directly, but also indirectly through the mediating effect of psychological resilience. At the same time, the prediction of psychological resilience by mindfulness was also moderated by gender, with girls' psychological resilience being more affected by the level of mindfulness compared to boys.

ABSTRACT

The study aims to explore the relationship among mindfulness, depression, meaning in life (MIL) and psychological resilience (PR), and verify whether MIL and PR have a chain mediating effect between mindfulness and depression. 1034 college students in a province were investigated by using Adolescent Mindfulness Scale, Depression Scale, Meaning in Life Scale and Psychological Resilience Scale. Hierarchical multiple regression and bootstrap was used to analyze the data and test whether MIL and PR play a chain mediating role between mindfulness and depression among university students. In the present research, the direct effect value of mindfulness on college students' depression was 0.14, and the effect amount was 61%. The effect values of MIL and PR between mindfulness and college students' depression were 0.03 and 0.05, and the effect amount is 13% and 22%. In the meantime, the chain mediating effect of MIL and PR was significant, the effect value is 0.01 and the effect amount is 4%. The effects of mindfulness on depression of university students were mediated by MIL, PR and the chain of MIL and PR.

ABSTRACT

Phosphorus is an essential macronutrient for plant development and metabolism, and plants have evolved ingenious mechanisms to overcome phosphate (Pi) starvation. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of shoot and root architecture by low phosphorus conditions and the coordinated utilization of Pi and nitrogen remain largely unclear. Here, we show that Nodulation Signaling Pathway 1 (NSP1) and NSP2 regulate rice tiller number by promoting the biosynthesis of strigolactones (SLs), a class of phytohormones with fundamental effects on plant architecture and environmental responses. We found that NSP1 and NSP2 are induced by Oryza sativa PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE2 (OsPHR2) in response to low-Pi stress and form a complex to directly bind the promoters of SL biosynthesis genes, thus markedly increasing SL biosynthesis in rice. Interestingly, the NSP1/2-SL signaling module represses the expression of CROWN ROOTLESS 1 (CRL1), a newly identified early SL-responsive gene in roots, to restrain lateral root density under Pi deficiency. We also demonstrated that GR244DO treatment under normal conditions inhibits the expression of OsNRTs and OsAMTs to suppress nitrogen absorption but enhances the expression of OsPTs to promote Pi absorption, thus facilitating the balance between nitrogen and phosphorus uptake in rice. Importantly, we found that NSP1p:NSP1 and NSP2p:NSP2 transgenic plants show improved agronomic traits and grain yield under low- and medium-phosphorus conditions. Taken together, these results revealed a novel regulatory mechanism of SL biosynthesis and signaling in response to Pi starvation, providing genetic resources for improving plant architecture and nutrient-use efficiency in low-Pi environments.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the long-term effect of vitamin D supplementation compared to placebo over 5 years in participants with knee osteoarthritis (OA). We also aimed to describe the effect of maintaining sufficient serum vitamin D levels over five years in knee OA. METHODS: Participants (n = 173) from the Hobart centre of the Vitamin D Effects on Osteoarthritis (VIDEO) trial were extensively followed up 3 years after the cessation of 2-year investigational treatment. Participants were classified as maintaining sufficient vitamin D (n = 79) and not maintaining sufficient vitamin D (n = 61) groups. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in change in the knee symptoms, depression, and serum levels of IL6 and hs-CRP between both comparisons after 3 years of cessation of the clinical trial. However, among participants who reported no knee surgery (KS), there was a significant improvement in WOMAC function (ß: - 83.7, 95% CI: - 167.3, 0) and depression scores (ß: - 1.3, 95% CI: - 2.3, - 0.2) in vitamin D group compared to the placebo group. Similarly, those who maintained adequate vitamin D levels over 5 years had significantly less WOMAC knee pain (ß: - 33.9, 95% CI: - 65.7, - 2) and physical dysfunction (ß: - 105.5, 95% CI: - 198.2, - 12.8) than participants with vitamin D deficiency over 5 years. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D supplementation over 2 years or maintaining vitamin D sufficiency for 5 years was not associated with statistically significant differences in change in knee symptom scores over 5 years. However, among participants who did not report KS, 2-year vitamin D supplementation and maintaining sufficient vitamin D was linked to modest improvements in knee symptoms and depression scores in knee OA.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the petroleum-based plastic pollution problem has been causing global attention. The idea of "degradation and up-cycling of plastics" was proposed for solving the environmental pollution caused by non-degradable plastics. Following this idea, plastics would be firstly degraded and then reconstructed. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) can be produced from the degraded plastic monomers as a choice to recycle among various plastics. PHA, a family of biopolyesters synthesized by many microbes, have attracted great interest in industrial, agricultural and medical sectors due to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, thermoplasticity and carbon neutrality. Moreover, the regulations on PHA monomer compositions, processing technology, and modification methods may further improve the material properties, making PHA a promising alternative to traditional plastics. Furthermore, the application of the "next-generation industrial biotechnology (NGIB)" utilizing extremophiles for PHA production is expected to enhance the PHA market competitiveness, promoting this environmentally friendly bio-based material to partially replace petroleum-based products, and achieve sustainable development with carbon-neutrality. This review summarizes the basic material properties, plastic upcycling via PHA biosynthesis, processing and modification methods of PHA, and biosynthesis of novel PHA.

ABSTRACT

Vitamin D deficiency is a globally common situation and closely related with many chronic diseases. It is a hot topic to examine if vitamin D supplementation is effective for the treatment of diseases, and there have been dozens of clinical trials published in recent years. However, most studies have not proved the extra-skeletal benefits of vitamin D supplementation on these diseases. Some inherent shortcomings of these trials, such as inclusion with vitamin D-sufficient and obese participants, low response rate from participants and the insensitive changes in chosen outcomes over a shorter period, may be main reasons why most studies have yet to demonstrate effects of vitamin D supplementation. In this editorial, we aim to discuss the perspectives on how can we design a proper trial for vitamin D treatment of diseases based on the evidence-based practice framework PICOS (participants, intervention, control, outcomes and study design) in the future. First, right participants should be chosen, which is crucial for the success of vitamin D clinical trials. Participants with vitamin D sufficiency (e.g., baseline 25(OH)D of >50 nmol/L), obesity (e.g., body mass index > 30 kg/m2 ) and/or high vitamin D response index could be excluded from the trials. Second, intervention with vitamin D in right forms or dosages should be used. Vitamin D3 supplementation with appropriate dosages that keep 25(OH)D levels between 75 and 100 nmol/L is recommended. Third, 'contamination' in the control groups needs to pay attention. To diminish this, it is ideal to include participants less interfered by sun exposure (such as living in places at a high latitude) or with greater compliance (less interference by supplemental vitamin D-containing nutrients). Fourth, the outcome measures should be sensitive to change to avoid type II error. For outcomes such as bone density, radiographic osteoarthritis and cardiovascular diseases, follow-up period of 3-5 years may be required to observe the changes. Last, precision clinical trials may be the only way to prove the benefits of vitamin D supplementation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations of dietary vitamin K intake with changes in knee symptoms and structures in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: Participants with symptomatic knee OA were enrolled (n = 259) and followed up for 2 years (n = 212). Baseline dietary vitamin K intake was calculated from a validated food frequency questionnaire. Knee symptoms were assessed by using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores. Knee cartilage defects, bone marrow lesions, and effusion-synovitis volume were measured from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Univariable and multivariable linear regressions were used for analyses. RESULTS: A higher vitamin K intake quartile was significantly associated with a greater decrease in the total WOMAC score and dysfunction score over 24 months. The subgroup analyses showed in patients with severe baseline visual analog scale (VAS) pain that a higher vitamin K intake quartile was associated with more improvement in all WOMAC scores. There were no overall significant associations between vitamin K intake and changes in MRI features. In subgroup analysis, vitamin K intake was negatively associated with changes in tibiofemoral, patellar, and total cartilage defects in participants with a severe baseline radiographic grade and was negatively associated with change in total and patellar cartilage defects in participants with severe baseline VAS pain and in female patients. CONCLUSION: The association of higher vitamin K intake with decreased knee symptoms over 24 months in patients with knee OA suggests that clinical trials examining the effect of vitamin K supplementation for knee OA symptoms are warranted. Whether there is an effect on knee structure is unclear.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) in children is a predominantly congenital developmental disease with complex causes and diverse symptoms. Chinese medicine mainly uses acupuncture for the treatment of CP; as the disease site is in the brain, emphasis is placed on scalp acupuncture therapy. There were studies about the treatment but different studies had very different results. In this study, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the recent reports on scalp acupuncture in the treatment of CP in children, providing evidence for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Methods: The databases of PubMed, Chinese Biomedical Literature (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and VIP were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on scalp acupuncture treatment of pediatric CP published from January 2000 to December 2021. The inclusion criteria of studies were made according to the Participants, Intervention, Control, Outcomes, Study design (PICOS) principles. The Cochrane risk of bias 2.0 was used to evaluate the bias of the included literature. Meta-analysis was performed using the effective rate, Mental Development Index (MDI), Psychological Development Index (PDI), and Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-88 scale) as outcome indicators for the efficacy, and the safety of scalp acupuncture was assessed. Results: Initially, 332 articles were retrieved; after screening, 11 articles were included in the selection, including a total of 731 children, with 369 and 362 children for the experimental group and control group respectively. Meta-analysis showed that scalp acupuncture significantly improved the symptoms of children with CP [odds ratio (OR) =3.73, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.49-5.58, Z=6.41, P<0.00001], could significantly improve their mental development [mean difference (MD) =15.58, 95% CI: 11.74-19.43, Z=7.95, P<0.00001] and psychological development (MD =13.23, 95% CI: 6.17-20.28, Z=3.67, P=0.0002) of children, and significantly improved the motor ability of CP children (MD =17.45, 95% CI: 8.19-26.72, Z=3.69, P=0.0002). Discussion: The curative effect of scalp acupuncture is better than that of conventional rehabilitation. Scalp-based acupuncture therapy can effectively improve the symptoms of pediatric CP, promote the mental and psychological development of children, and improve their gross motor function, the treatment is safe.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the associations of blood pressure and arterial stiffness with knee cartilage volume in patients with knee OA. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed on the data from participants in a randomized controlled trial that identified the effects of vitamin D supplementation on knee structures and symptoms among patients with symptomatic knee OA. Brachial and central blood pressure, arterial stiffness indicators and knee cartilage volume were measured at baseline and the 2 year follow-up. Associations were assessed using generalized estimating equations. RESULTS: Among 231 participants (average age 63.2 years), 48.9% were females. Higher supine systolic and diastolic pressures were significantly associated with lower tibial cartilage volume (systolic: lateral ß -6.23, medial ß -5.14, total ß -11.35 mm3/mmHg; diastolic: lateral ß -10.25, medial ß -11.29, total ß -21.50 mm3/mmHg). Higher supine systolic pressure was associated with lower femoral cartilage volume (lateral ß -17.35, total ß -28.31 mm3/mmHg). Central systolic pressure and arterial stiffness indicators (including pulse wave velocity, central pulse pressure and peripheral pulse pressure) were largely not associated with knee cartilage volume; however, higher augmentation index was associated with lower tibial and femoral cartilage volume (tibial: medial ß -8.24, total ß -19.13 mm3/%; femoral: lateral ß -23.70, medial ß -26.42, total ß -50.12 mm3/%). CONCLUSIONS: Blood pressure and arterial stiffness are associated with knee cartilage volume at several sites in knee OA patients. This supports that blood pressure and arterial stiffness may involve in the progression of knee OA.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was undertaken to determine whether vitamin D supplementation or maintaining sufficient vitamin D level reduces foot pain over 2 years in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: A post hoc study was conducted from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial named the Vitamin D Effect on Osteoarthritis (VIDEO) study. Symptomatic knee OA patients with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels between 12.5 nmoles/liter and 60 nmoles/liter were included and randomly allocated to either monthly vitamin D3 or placebo treatment (1:1) for 2 years. Manchester Foot Pain and Disability Index (MFPDI) was used to evaluate foot pain and disabling foot pain was defined as at least 1 of the 10 functional limitation items (items 1-9 and 11) being documented as on "most/every day(s)" in the last month. A repeated-measures, mixed-effects model was used to analyze the change of MFPDI scores between groups adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS: A total of 413 patients with a mean age of 63.2 years (49.7% males) were enrolled and 340 completed the study. The mean MFPDI score was 22.8 ± 7.3, with 23.7% of participants having disabling foot pain at baseline. There were significant differences in MFPDI scores change between groups over 2 years, with more improvements in the vitamin D group than in the placebo group (-0.03 versus 1.30; P = 0.013) and more improvement in those maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels (n = 226) than those who did not (n = 114) (-0.09 versus 2.19; P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Vitamin D supplementation and maintenance of sufficient vitamin D levels may improve foot pain in those with knee OA.

ABSTRACT

Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platforms have attracted increasing interest for photonic integrated devices with an ultra-small footprint. The distinct feature is the strong light confinement in the silicon region due to a high refractive-index-contrast. In contrast, releasing the light field out of the silicon region is also of great significance for providing a useful supplement to existing light guiding mechanisms and for facilitating versatile applications. Here, subwavelength grating slot (SWGS) microring resonators, which can effectively release light out of the silicon region for athermal and sensing applications, are proposed and demonstrated. The mechanism of releasing light relies on the combination of a surface enhanced supermode in a slot waveguide and a Bloch mode in a subwavelength grating waveguide. Four types of racetrack microring resonators (strip, slot, strip-SWGS, and slot-SWGS) were fabricated for comparison. The slot-SWGS microring resonator shows the best performance for athermal and sensing applications. The demonstrations may be useful for new releasing-light-enabled devices and applications.

ABSTRACT

Denitrifying sulfur conversion-associated enhanced biological phosphorous removal (DS-EBPR) system is not only a novel wastewater treatment process, but also an ideal model for microbial ecology in a community context. However, it exists the knowledge gap on the roles and interactions of functional microorganisms in the DS-EBPR system for carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) bioconversions. We use genome-resolved metagenomics to build up an ecological model of microbial communities in a lab-scale DS-EBPR system with stable operation for more than 400 days. Our results yield 11 near-complete draft genomes that represent a substantial portion of the microbial community (39.4%). Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and sulfide-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) promote complex metabolic processes and interactions for C, N, P and S conversions. Bins 1-4 and 10 are considered as new potential polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs), in which Bins 1-4 can be considered as S-related PAOs (S-PAOs) with no previously cultivated or reported members. Our findings give an insight into a new ecological system with C, N, P and S simultaneous bioconversions and improve the understanding of interactions among SRB, SOB, denitrifiers and PAOs within a community context.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation and maintaining sufficient serum vitamin D on depressive symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and vitamin D deficiency. DESIGN: A prespecified secondary analysis of a multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were randomly assigned to receive oral vitamin D3 (50,000 IU, n = 209) or placebo (n = 204) monthly for 24 months. In addition, participants who completed the trial were classified into 2 groups according to their serum 25(OH)D levels at month 3 and 24 as follows: not consistently sufficient (serum 25(OH)D ≤ 50 nmol/L at month 3 and/or 24), and consistently sufficient (serum 25(OH)D > 50 nmol/L at both month 3 and 24). Multilevel mixed-effect models were used to compare differences of change in PHQ-9 scores between groups. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This clinical trial was conducted in participants with symptomatic knee OA and vitamin D deficiency from June 2010 to December 2013 in Tasmania and Victoria, Australia. MEASURES: The primary outcome was the depressive symptoms change over 24 months, which was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9, 0-27). RESULTS: Of 599 participants who were screened for eligibility, 413 participants were enrolled (mean age: 63.2 years; 50.3% female) and 340 participants (intervention n = 181, placebo n = 159, 82.3% retention rate) completed the study. The baseline prevalence of depression (PHQ-9 score ≥5) was 25.4%. Depressive symptoms improved more in the vitamin D supplementation group compared to the placebo group [ß: -0.66, 95% confidence interval (CI): -1.22 to -0.11, P for difference = .02] and in the participants who maintained vitamin D sufficiency compared to those who did not (ß: -0.73, 95% CI: -1.41 to -0.05, P for difference = .04) over 24 months. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS: These findings suggest that vitamin D supplementation and maintaining adequate vitamin D levels over 24 months may be beneficial for depressive symptoms in patients with knee OA.

ABSTRACT

A visual and sensitive Hg2+ detection strategy was developed based on split DNAzyme amplification and hemin-graphene oxide composites (H-GNs). Two split DNAzyme sequences can form two entire enzyme-strands DNA (E-DNA) by T-Hg2+-T interaction. The E-DNA can bind with the loop of molecular beacon (MB) to form Mg2+-dependent DNAzyme structure. The formed DNAzyme can circularly cleave the loop of MB, resulting large amount of DNA fragments. The resultant DNA fragments can prevent H-GNs from aggregation by adsorbing on its surface. Consequently, the supernate with large amount of H-GNs shows dark blue color after chromogenic reaction. This strategy shows a linear range from 50 pM to 1200 pM. ABSTRACT

Ginseng is widely used in energy drinks, dietary supplements, and herbal medicines, and its pharmacological actions are related with energy metabolism. As an important modulating energy metabolism pathway, liver X receptors (LXRs) can promote the resolving of hepatic fibrosis and inflammation. The present study aims to evaluate the regulation of 25-OCH3-PPD, a ginsenoside isolated from Panax ginseng, against hepatic fibrosis and inflammation in thioacetamide (TAA)-stimulated mice by activating the LXRs pathway. 25-OCH3-PPD decreases serum ALT/AST levels and improves the histological pathology of liver in TAA-induced mice; attenuates transcripts of pro-fibrogenic markers associated with hepatic stellate cell activation; attenuates the levels of pro-Inflammatory cytokines and blocks apoptosis happened in liver; inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome by affecting P2X7R activation; and regulates PI3K/Akt and LKB1/AMPK-SIRT1. 25-OCH3-PPD also facilitates LX25Rs and FXR activities decreased by TAA stimulation. 25-OCH3-PPD also decreases α-SMA via regulation of LXRs and P2X7R-NLRP3 in vitro. Our data suggest the possibility that 25-OCH3-PPD promotes activity of LXRs to ameliorate P2X7R-mediated NLRP3 inflammasome in the development of hepatic fibrosis.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to determine whether vitamin D supplementation and maintaining vitamin D sufficiency are associated with changes in inflammatory and metabolic biomarkers in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and vitamin D deficiency. A total of 413 participants with symptomatic knee OA and vitamin D deficiency were enrolled in a randomised, placebo-controlled trial and received 1·25 mg vitamin D3 or placebo monthly for 24 months across two sites. In this post hoc analysis, 200 participants from one site (ninety-four from the placebo group and 106 from the vitamin D group; mean age 63·1 (sd 7·3) years, 53·3 % women) were randomly selected for measurement of serum levels of inflammatory and metabolic biomarkers at baseline and 24 months using immunoassays. In addition, participants were classified into two groups according to serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels at months 3 and 24: (1) not consistently sufficient (25(OH)D≤50 nmol/l at either month 3 or 24, n 61), and (2) consistently sufficient (25(OH)D>50 nmol/l at both months 3 and 24, n 139). Compared with placebo, vitamin D supplementation had no significant effect on change in serum high-sensitive C-reactive protein, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, leptin, adiponectin, resistin, adipsin and apelin. Being consistently vitamin D sufficient over 2 years was also not associated with changes in these biomarkers compared with not being consistently sufficient. Vitamin D supplementation and maintaining vitamin D sufficiency did not alter serum levels of inflammatory and metabolic biomarkers over 2 years in knee OA patients who were vitamin D insufficient, suggesting that they may not affect systemic inflammation in knee OA patients.

ABSTRACT

Electrical stimulation (ES) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) are widely used in bone regeneration because of their osteogenic activity. However, the combined effects of ES and supplemental IGF-1 on the whole bone formation process remain unclear. In this study, fluorescence staining and an MTT assay were first utilized to observe the influence of ES and IGF-1 on MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation and adhesion in vitro. Subsequently, osteogenic differentiation was evaluated by the alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) and the expression of osteogenic marker genes. In addition, cell mineralization was determined by alizarin red staining and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We demonstrated that the MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation was significantly higher for treatments combining IGF-1 and ES than for treatments with IGF-1 alone. The combination of IGF-1 and ES increased the MC3T3-E1 cell ALP activity, the expression of osteogenesis-related genes and the calcium deposition with a clear dose-dependent effect. Our data show the synergistic effect of IGF-1 and ES in promoting the proliferation, differentiation and mineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells, which suggests that it would be more effective to combine the proper dose of IGF-1 with ES to promote local bone damage repair and regeneration.

ABSTRACT

Denitrifying sulfur conversion-assisted enhanced biological phosphorus removal (DS-EBPR) has recently been developed for simultaneously removing nitrogen and phosphorus from saline sewage with minimal sludge production. This novel process could potentially enable sustainable wastewater treatment. Yet, the core functional bacteria and their roles are unknown. Here, we used high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing coupled with principal coordinates analysis and ANOVA with Tukey's test to unravel the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of functional bacteria and their synergetic and competitive interactions. We did not find any obvious spatial heterogeneity within the bacterial population in different size-fractionated sludge samples, but the main functional bacteria varied significantly with operation time. Thauera was enriched (9.26~13.63%) as become the core functional genus in the DS-EBPR reactors and links denitrifying phosphorus removal to sulfide oxidation. The other two functional genera were sulfate-reducing Desulfobacter (4.31~12.85%) and nitrate-reducing and sulfide-oxidizing Thiobacillus (4.79~9.92%). These bacteria cooperated in the DS-EBPR process: Desulfobacter reduced sulfate to sulfide for utilization by Thiobacillus, while Thauera and Thiobacillus competed for nitrate and sulfide as well as Thauera and Desulfobacter competed for acetate. This study is the first to unravel the interactions among core functional bacteria in DS-EBPR, thus improving our understanding of how this removal process works.
